Illustration
Some classic creations, and some new designs.
Originally I trained as an illustrator, studying at Lincoln University in the UK. Having a background in drawing has helped spring me into a creative life and career.
Digital
When creating my art I use the medium which best suites the task at hand. With digital illustration I would typically draw and ink the image, scan in to illustrator and vectorise the lines, then colour either in Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. I often create my own patterns and textures to give my illustration more depth. Creating digital imagery is advantageous when working on projects with a quick turn around, or when producing mass printed items such as badges or poster prints. A recent bonus is that I have been able apply my art skills to create work the web pages. Some of the plant illustrations below may be familiar from the Indoor Plant Guide page created for Flying Flowers.
Paintings
When painting I use acrylics, as I prefer the texture and the quick drying times. Although this is a more time consuming process compared to digital imagery, it can be more satisfying to the recipient of a commission for example. As they know their item is truly unique. I paint on canvas, wood and even items of clothing such as shoes.
Sketches
An important part of any design process is sketching out your ideas. Whether it be for an illustration, or like I often do, a rough layout for a piece of digital work such as an email or webpage. Below are some examples of my sketches.
